Step One: Prevent Dry Skin with Tips from Chanel, our Dietitian

Chanel Dry Skin Solutions

A healthy diet is your first defense against dehydration. Our bodies are 70% water, staying hydrated plays a huge role in keeping our skin looking its best. Drink plenty of water (aim for half of your body weight in ounces of filtered water) and make sure you’re getting your omega 3’s. Omega 3 fatty acids help to reduce systemic inflammation and help to keep skin moisturized and elastic. Flaxseed oil, the plant source of Omega 3’s, is great for adding to smoothies! It must be kept refrigerated, try pulsing in 1 tablespoon at the end of preparing your smoothie to make sure the oil does not heat and break down. Fish oil is the animal source of Omega 3’s. Make sure you are choosing a quality fish oil; try taking 2  Metagenics EPA/DHA 720 per day.

For best results pair hydration and Omega’s with the following:

· Avoid very hot showers, since they can further dry out your skin.

· Wear sunscreen year round (sun damage can cause dry skin).

· Aim for 7-8 hours of shut eye. Sleep helps to reduce stress hormones and allows the body to repair body tissues and organs including your skin!

Step Two: Exfoliate

Our skin cells turnover about every 28 days. Exfoliation is key for preventing dull, greyish skin and for making sure products you use are able to work their best. For the body we recommend trying dry brushing. You skin should feel softer in just one session!

Dry Skin Solutions Dry Brush

How to Dry Brush: Using a body brush with natural bristles start at your feet and brush upward towards the heart. When you start on your arms, begin at the hands and work upward. Use firm strokes upwards or in a circular motion. For the stomach use a counterclockwise pattern. Bonus: this also helps increase circulation and can even lessen the appearance of cellulite!

Step Three: Lock in Moisture

You’re staying hydrated and exfoliating regularly, so what’s next? Keep that moisture sealed in using a lotion or oil. Looking for a natural option? Try Well Coconut Oil, great for sensitive skin and can help calm irritation. Looking for lotion? We like Earthsavers Vitamin Lotion, this unscented, lightweight lotion is perfect for everyday use and provides continuous hydration with no oily residue. This lotion is also 100% natural, with no parabens, sulfates or dyes!
